University of Florida International Scholars Program

International Experiences
I have had the incredible opportunity to pursue coursework, research, and volunteer projects abroad as an undergraduate. These international experiences relate directly to language coursework I have pursued during my time at UF.

Cambridge, England
St. Edmund's College, Cambridge University
I hopped the pond to participate in the UF in Cambridge study abroad program. This program offers a hands-on historical overview of France and Britain in the Age of Revolution, with exceptional access to archives, research libraries, museums and monuments at one of the oldest universities in the world. After a week-long intensive period in Paris, my class traveled to Cambridge, where we conducted individual historical research. I studied Parisian public health after the fall of the French monarchy in 1789, and my experiences at Cambridge ultimately inspired me to pursue a degree in history and complete an Honors Research Thesis.

Lima, Peru
Service Learning with UF Global Medical Training
I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at mobile primary care clinics in Lima, Peru. Shadowing local doctors and helping collect patient histories in isolated communities revealed how physicians serve as part of a larger public health team. The doctors provided patients with essential information about insurance, sanitation practices, and local health resources, and my time in Peru showed me the power of cultural competency and social awareness in medicine.

Busan, South Korea
US Department of State Critical Language Scholarship
I was awarded the US State Department Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) in 2019, which gave me a full scholarship to study Korean language and culture in Busan, South Korea. Through CLS I learned about a foreign language and culture in the most personal, visceral way possible, whether acquiring new vocabulary at a flower festival (수국=hydrangea) or learning about relations between North and South Korea from language partners who have family members living across the DMZ. My experiences in Busan showed me the power of remaining open to new cultures and experiences, and in pushing my boundaries I gained confidence in entirely unexpected ways.

French and Francophone Studies Minor
University of Florida
After taking French in high school, I decided to continue pursuing language study in university. Taking courses in composition, stylistics, and contemporary culture enriched my language skills as well as my understanding of francophone countries and cultures. My study abroad program at Cambridge opened with a week in Paris, and I was thrilled to practice my conversational skills. My undergraduate honors thesis is in French history, and being able to read archival documents in French has been invaluable in my research process.
