Campus Life Events

I attended a variety of events relating to international affairs, study abroad, and cross-cultural communication during my time at the University of Florida.  I have included short summaries of some of my favorite campus life events below.

Campus Life Events: Welcome

African Americans in Jazz Age Paris

Talk by Tyler Stovall
University of California Santa Cruz

This event was particularly engaging because I study French culture as part of both my minor and major curriculum.  It was fascinating to learn more about the unique race relations that dominated France in the early twentieth century because previously I had only been taught about French concepts of race as they pertained to Algeria or the Caribbean, not specifically in the metropole.

After the Arab Spring: Politics and Participation in the Middle East

Talk by Mark Lynch
George Washington University

This was the first academic talk I attended outside of my classes, and it was in an area I knew nothing about, which was quite intimidating.  However, seeing the speaker interact with the audience and present his research illuminated how multilingual research and collaboration in the humanities happens, which was inspiring.

Museums and Slavery: Engaging the Past and the Present in the Public Sphere

Talk by Ana-Lucia Araujo
Howard University

Dr. Aroujo's talk explained how different museums represent slavery, comparing museums in France, England, and the US.  After volunteering with the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program and exploring African American History Museums in Mississippi and Alabama, I was able to compare some of my own experiences and observations.

UF International Program Student Panel

UF International Center

The event centered around a panel of students that had studied abroad in the past or were currently on exchange.  It was interesting to hear peoples' insights about adjusting to life abroad and financing study abroad programs, particularly after having studied abroad myself.
